The Agafay Desert: Is it Worth the Hype? (A Brutally Honest Review)

By Red City Craft | Travel & Destinations

If you have scrolled through Instagram photos of Marrakech lately, you have seen it. White canvas tents glowing in the twilight. Infinity pools that seem to drop off the edge of the earth. Camels walking in silhouette against a purple sky.

This is the Agafay Desert. Located just 45 minutes from Marrakech, it has exploded in popularity as the "chic" alternative to the Sahara. But many travelers arrive confused: "Where are the sand dunes?"

At Red City Craft, we believe in honest travel. Here is the truth about Agafay, who it is for, and how to do it right.

The Reality Check: Rock vs. Sand

The #1 Misconception

Let’s get the big question out of the way: The Agafay is not a sand desert.

Geologically, it is a Reg (stone desert), not an Erg (sand desert). You will not see rolling orange dunes like in Lawrence of Arabia. Instead, you will see dramatic, moon-like hills of rock and beige earth.

Is it still beautiful? Absolutely. The landscape feels prehistoric and vast.

Is it the Sahara? No.

⚔️ The Showdown: Agafay vs. The Sahara (Merzouga)

Feature Agafay Desert Sahara (Merzouga)
Travel Time 45 mins from Marrakech 9+ hours drive (each way)
Landscape Stone dunes, lunar vibes Giant orange sand dunes
Vibe Luxury, Glamping, Party Adventure, Silence, Nature
Best For Weekend trips, Bachelors, Luxury Serious travelers, Bucket listers

The Verdict: If you have less than 5 days in Morocco, choose Agafay. Losing 2 full days just to drive to the Sahara isn't worth it.

🐪 Top 3 Things to Do in Agafay

It’s not just about sitting in a tent.

1. The Sunset Camel Ride (The Classic)

Even without sand, riding a camel as the sun dips behind the Atlas Mountains is magical. The light turns the rocky hills a deep purple and gold.

2. Quad Biking (The Adrenaline)

Because the ground is solid rock/dirt, Agafay is actually better for Quad biking than the Sahara (where bikes get stuck in soft sand). It is fast, dusty, and incredibly fun. Agafay Desert Quad Biking & Camel Ride

3. The "Dinner Under the Stars"

Most camps offer a "Pass" for dinner even if you aren't sleeping there. Expect a traditional Moroccan feast (Tagine, Couscous) followed by Gnawa musicians and fire breathers. Agafay Desert Sunset Dinner Show with Transfer

⛺ Where to Stay: The "Glamping" Experience

Agafay is the capital of Luxury Glamping. These aren't sleeping bags; they are 5-star hotel rooms with canvas walls.

What to Expect:

  • Private Bathrooms: Yes, most tents have hot showers and flushing toilets inside.

  • Electricity: Solar-powered (charge your phone, but maybe not your hair dryer).

  • The Cold: Be warned—desert temperatures drop drastically at night.

Packing Tip: Even if it is 30°C (86°F) in the day, it can hit 5°C (40°F) at night. Pack layers. A Wool Djellaba Or Sahara Scarf is traditional, or style one of our Velvet Caftans with a denim jacket for a "Desert Boho" look.

👗 What to Wear in the Desert (The "Dune" Aesthetic)

You are going to take 500 photos. Dress the part.

The desert palette is neutral: Beige, Brown, Grey. To stand out, you need Contrast or Texture.

  • For the Day (Poolside): Opt for natural fabrics that breathe. Our Linen Resort Gandouras in Terracotta or Cream are designed exactly for this heat.

  • For the Night (Dinner): This is your fashion moment. The "Boho Chic" vibe is mandatory in Agafay.

    • Her: A Midnight Black Caftan with gold jewelry looks striking by the firelight.

    • Him: A linen shirt and leather sandals.

  • The Accessory: Don't bring a rolling suitcase to the desert (it won't roll on rocks). Pack your essentials in a rugged Moroccan Straw Weekender Bag. It looks better the dustier it gets.

🌤️ Practical Logistics

Can I drive there myself?  We don't recommend it. The "roads" are unmarked dirt tracks, and GPS signal is spotty. If you get a flat tire, you are on your own. Take a booked transfer.

Is it safe?  Yes, very. The camps are gated and guarded.

When is the best time to go?  Spring (March-May) and Autumn (Sept-Nov). Summer (July-Aug) is scorching hot (45°C+), and many camps close or are unbearable without heavy AC.
